WAVERLY — Meghan Sutryk had a career night here Tuesday to lead Waverly to a 47-31 win over Spencer-Van Etten in IAC girls basketball action.

Sutryk scored 20 points, on 10 of 13 shooting from the field, handed out seven steals, registered seven steals and grabbed four rebounds as Waverly evened its season record at 5-5.

Waverly coach Brian Miller lauded Sutryk's efforts.

"She didn't play the last 6 1/2 minutes and to shoot 10 of 13 from the field and to have seven steals and seven assists ... she's a complete basketball player and she showed it tonight," he said.

Sutryk scored 10 of her points in the first quarter as the Lady Wolverines jumped out to a 14-0 lead.

"We played good team defense and we got out in transition and got some easy baskets.," said Miller. "Plus, we executed very well against their 3-2 zone. We found some gaps and knocked down some shots in that first quarter to get some confidence. It spread the zone and it really allowed us to penetrate as the game went on."

After S-VE cut the lead to 12, 26-14, at the half, Sutryk scored six points in the third quarter as Waverly used a 13-7 spurt to build its lead to 39-21.

Kelly Lyon scored 14 points and had four rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocked shots for the winners. Cassidy Farr chipped in with eight points and Mattie Van De Wall had four rebounds and four assists.

Waverly shot 52 percent (23 of 44) from the field and had 16 assists as a team.

"We played very unselfish basketball tonight. We had some nice ball movement and made some nice assists," said Miller.

Samantha Steiner led S-VE (1-8) with eight points and Kelli Dhuy added seven.
